The girls flag football team has been having offseason meetings recently to prepare the girls for the kick off to the upcoming season.
The girls flag football team’s season officially starts March 9 on the first week of spring sports . The girls who want to join have been training hard to be ready for competition when the time comes. Coaches focus on basic skills like throwing, catching and the rules of the game during offseason meetings.
Girls flag football is a newer sport at Monroe-Woodbury and it has quickly gained popularity. Many students have shown interest in joining the team because it gives them a chance to play football in a safe and competitive way.
Assistant coach Ms. Santoianni shared that many girls have wanted this opportunity for a long time.
“Girls grow up watching their brothers or other male family members play football, but they don’t always get the same chances,” said Ms. Santoianni. “This sport gives them a way to be involved and show their abilities.”
The fairly new addition of flag football at Monroe-Woodbury gives equal opportunity to both boys and girls who want to play football at the high school level.
Players say the offseason helps them feel more confident before the season starts.
“At first I was nervous to join a new sport with new coaches and a new team, but the environment they create makes me feel more at home. The team helps you a lot. I’m glad to join my freshman year,” said Sophomore Kailey Baylor.
The team continues to meet regularly and work on improving their skills. Coaches emphasize staying focused and supporting one another as the season gets closer. Many players are excited to test what they have learned from offseason meetings once official games begin.
Coach Santoianni said that the offseason is important for building a strong foundation.
“We focus on learning the basics now so the girls feel prepared once games begin,” she said. “It’s not just about winning, but also about growth and confidence.”
The team’s schedule will include matchups against other schools in the Section IX area, and invites to the New York Jets training facility for games. This gives players the chance to travel the area and bond with their team.
