Students at Monroe Woodbury High School took part in adaptive games during gym classes the week of April 6 as part of an initiative to promote awareness for the school’s special education program, “Diverse Minds, Unified Hearts.”
The activities were held throughout the week in physical education classes and introduced students to modified versions of sports designed for individuals with disabilities. The goal of the program was to help students better understand the challenges faced by peers in special education while encouraging inclusion within the school community.
“We wanted students to experience these activities firsthand so they could better understand different abilities,” said Coach Santoianni, a physical education teacher at the school. “It is important for students to recognize that not everyone experiences sports and physical activity in the same way. These activities help build empathy and inclusion.”
During the week, students participated in games that required adjustments such as limited mobility, altered rules, or sensory challenges. These modifications reflected how traditional sports can be adapted to meet diverse needs.
“It was different from our normal gym activities, but it helped me understand how some students may face challenges every day,” said Brianna Martinez, a junior at the school. “I think participating made a lot of students more aware and respectful.”
The advocacy for “Diverse Minds, Unified Hearts” program focuses on supporting students with special needs through education, awareness, and community involvement. School staff members said events like this are an important step in encouraging understanding among the broader student body.
Another student said the activities changed their perspective on inclusion in school sports and activities.
“I learned that even small adaptations can help people feel included,” said Christina Samuel, a senior. “It made me realize how important it is for everyone to have the chance to participate.”
School officials said they hope to continue similar activities in the future to further strengthen inclusion and understanding within the school community.
