The high school’s drama club will be performing “The Spongebob Musical” as this year’s spring musical in March.
In the show, the audience follows Spongebob and his friends as they work to stop the volcano, Mount Humongus, before it explodes and destroys Bikini Bottom. In addition to Spongebob, the play features show favorites like Patrick, Sandy, Squidward, Mr. Krabs, and Plankton.
“Spongebob” contains music written by famous artists such as David Bowie, Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, and Panic! At the Disco. The drama club hopes to bring Spongebob to life and give the audience an amazing experience.
This show exhibits happiness and playfulness, and there were many reasons the drama club and director, Mr. Kaplan chose this musical.
“The team chose this play because it offered something for everyone. Fun characters for the actors to play, widely creative design elements for the crews, a contemporary score with more traditional orchestrations for the band, and a fun, funny, and surprisingly topical story and message for our audiences,” said Kaplan.
Rehearsals for Spongebob have been going on for two weeks now, with these rehearsals including dance and music preparation. The stage crew and lighting crew have been working hard already to build sets and bring the show to life.
“There is so much for lights and costumes and set and sound to dig their teeth into and they can throw their own imaginative ideas into it,” said Mr. Kaplan.
One of the most important parts of this show is to encourage the audience to use their imagination.
“The play is joyful and hopeful and I hope the audience leaves uplifted at the end of the play,” said Kaplan. “On top of that, I hope they take away the message of hope, forgiveness, and the importance of a community to uplift everyone in that community.”
The musical brings a certain feeling of hope and happiness to the audience. It is a creative show that brings creativity to life.
“My favorite thing is how creative and imaginative the show is all around, it invites the audience to come play pretend with us in the best possible way,” said Kaplan.
Performances are scheduled for March 20 and 21 at 7 p.m.
