“Lord of Mysteries”, or LoTM as it is referred to by a majority of the fandom is a 2025 Donghwa (Chinese Anime) adaptation of a popular web novel that is a dark fantasy with a Victorian era setting that follows Zhou Mingrui a Chinese office worker that was transmigrated–the soul passing into a different body after death–into an unfamiliar world full of mystery and mysticism.
“Lord of Mysteries” has two series’ that are separate to the main one, “Lord of Mysteries: Chibi Theatre” which is a short segment spin off show, that follows small events that were not adapted in the main show and “Old Neil’s Mysticism Class” which gives small lessons about the lore of the story that help the watcher enjoy the show more.
The show started off strong with its first episode being well received by long time fans of the novel series, and was later announced that season one would have 13 episodes covering the first volume “Clown”.
The first season showed how Zhou Mingrui adapted to his new identity as Klein Moretti, and his journey to find a way back to his original world.
The idea of transmigration is a very overdone concept but “Lord of Mysteries” stands out in this regard by showing a more realistic approach to the concept. Transmigration is a prominent element in mythology and is a big part of the show’s lore and main story.
The story’s setting shows the Victorian era amazingly by showing an emphasis on scientific advancements, most prominently the steam engine and railroads along with other advancements.
The main focus of the first season was the Nighthawks, a part of the church of the Evernight that deals with the supernatural.
Although season one was well received by fans of the series it cut out quite a bit of the first volume of the series which makes it a little difficult to follow at times, the Quilangos Incident and the City of Silver Arc were both cut from the first season much to many fans dismay. Since two of the major arcs within volume one were not adapted it was decided that there would be an hour long special episode that would cover what was cut out in the first season and is slated to come out in the summer of 2026.
SPOILER ALERT!
“Lord of Mysteries” had shown how emotion can cloud people’s judgement in a realistic way. In episode nine, “Party”, the show portrayed the saying “The calm before the storm” in a way that was unexpected for many first time viewers and long time fans of the novel.
The contents of episode nine showed when the main character Klein advanced to sequence 8 “Clown” from being a sequence 9 “Seer”. To celebrate Klein’s advancement it was proposed by Old Neil to eat out at a restaurant, but it takes a turn for the worse when Klein and the rest of the Nighthawks get to Neil’s house to pick him up,
Old Neil had succumbed to the voices in his head from the hermit potion becoming corrupted having turned into something indescribable. Once Neil had calmed down he pleaded to the Nighthawks to let him live. This left many viewers to have a bad feeling of what was to come. At the end of the episode it was shown the aftermath of Old Neil’s death and how the Nighthawks coped with it.
The following episodes showed a drop in quality in comparison although not a significant drop, it was still noticeable.
After the first season concluded it was announced that the series would get a full adaptation having six seasons, two special episodes, and a movie.
There is little known about what’s to come production wise, but it has been said that there would not be a drop in quality for season two even though there would be thirty episodes which is more than double that of the first season. I deeply hope that the second season “Faceless” can surpass the first season ”Clown”.
Ultimately I believe that “Lord of Mysteries” was faithful to its source material and fleshed out its characters well, even though much of the story was cut out.
