A new elective called The Experience is coming to Monroe-Woodbury High School next school year. The course will be taught by Mr. Lewin, a social studies teacher who teaches Global 10 and the popular elective American Mosaic.
The class will be open to just juniors and seniors; however, this may change over time. Students are optimistic about the class.
““It gives students an opportunity to explore art in a unique way that you can’t find in any other class…not everyone has talent to play music.,” said senior Timothy Belmont.
And junior Ethan Gordon agreed.
“{The Experience} sounds interesting…I think it’s a good idea for students to be able to learn about different kinds of music,” said Gordon.
The class has been discussed and developed for many years, but with the recent phone ban implemented in New York, interest in bringing The Experience to life grew.
“I wanted to give [the students] an opportunity to experience and appreciate music during the school day,” said Mr. Lewin. He went on to mention that the class will incorporate 7-in-1 music players, record players, and CD players to give students access to music during both individual class periods and the whole school day.
The class flow of The Experience is different from the typical class. Some days students will have to listen to multiple songs of an album and research the artist, while other days will feature different teachers or administrators coming in, sharing their favorite artist, and why they mean so much to them.
“I wanted to create a community where people have a space to share their interests,” said Lewin, “and honestly, I want to do this as much as possible.”
Lewin said that he was unsure how the class would go and how much interest there would be in it. Students will truly get out of this class what they put into it.
“The Experience is an experiment,” remarked Lewin.
