From presenting in class to performing the starring role on stage. This list has some tips to get you through it all. As a frequent performer who has danced on stage at Carnegie Hall, here’s the scoop on how to overcome your fear of performing.
Make sure you’re prepared
I’m guessing this isn’t the first time you’ve heard this, but there’s honestly no other way to get around it! Imagine presenting a slideshow (in front of a big crowd), not knowing what’s on the next slide, compared to knowing that presentation inside and out. I would 100 percent feel more confident. Go over your material many times to ensure your performance will be flawless.
Procrastination is frustration
I cannot lie, we have all been there before. Sitting at the kitchen counter at 11 p.m. the day before a due date, working on a speech and trying to balance your sleep will definitely not improve your fear. Instead, prepare your material at least a week before. Working on it a little bit every day will make your life a LOT easier.
Smile through
This tip is especially important for on-stage performers. The audience does not know your dance/show by heart. If you mess up, and your emotions on your face instantly change, the audience will know something is wrong. Instead, keep your smile on your face and improvise until you’re back on track!
Get in front of people
When preparing for a show, practicing alone in your dark room is very different than being on stage with a bright, blinding spotlight and a huge crowd staring at you. Being comfortable in front of people is one of the first steps to overcome your fear. Also, its not lame to practice in front of your parents every night….even if they are quite judgmental.
Support
Talk to a teacher or a friend. You’d probably be surprised how many people can relate to you. Even though your friends cannot do your presentation for you, they would still be glad to help you in other ways behind the scenes. Either way, it’s nice to have a cheerleader in the crowd. Remember, you are not alone.
Here you have it folks, follow these 5 tips to ensure that your upcoming presentation will be absolutely perfect. Whether you’re shooting for that A+ or a scholarship, you will not be let down.
