Expectations were incredibly high for the Jets entering the 2024 season. They now have a fully healthy Aaron Rodgers, so Jets fans were hoping for a deep playoff run to end their 2024 campaign. The opposite can be said for the Giants, as fans were expecting slight improvements from last year’s team that went 6-11.
Through six weeks of action, both the Giants and the Jets are 2-4. The G-Men won in Cleveland against the struggling Browns in Week 3 and beat the Seahawks in week 5, while losing to Minnesota, Dallas, Washington and Cincinnati.
For the Jets, their two wins came at Tennessee in Week 2 and against New England in Week 3, and lost three in a row to the Bills, Broncos and the Vikings. Following the Jets loss to the Vikings in London, they fired their head coach Robert Saleh. Following a loss to the Bills in week 6, the Jets made a move by trading for top wide receiver Davante Adams, reuniting him with his former quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
Each team has had their fair share of bright spots, as both have rookies playing at a skilled level. The Giants have rookie phenom Malik Nabers, who is currently second in the NFL with 386 receiving yards, while the Jets have 20-year-old rookie running back Brealon Allen, who they snagged in the 4th round of this past draft and has been playing well beside Jets star running back Breece Hall.
Other players that have stood out for each team include rookie cornerback Dru Phillips and superstar defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence for the Giants. For the Jets, up and coming edge rusher Will McDonald IV and veteran wide receiver Allen Lazard have been playing well.
Despite these bright spots, both teams have clearly identifiable holes in their roster that need to be fixed.
Since Week 1, the Giants have had a big problem at cornerback. Deonte Banks has struggled immensely with tracking down receivers. He has allowed four touchdowns so far, matching the total he gave up last year during his entire rookie season.
Meanwhile, Gang Green’s offensive line play has improved from last season, but still hasn’t been great. They have yet to find consistency among that group. This needs to be fixed fast.
Statistically, the Jets beat the Giants in two out of three offensive categories, with points per game and rushing yards per game going in favor of the Jets, and passing yards per game in favor of the Giants.
The Jets’ defense has the edge in points allowed per game and passing yards allowed per game. They’re 2nd in the league, for that matter. However, the Giants have the edge in rushing yards per game.
