“Last Chance U: Basketball” is a documentary about the basketball team at East Los Angeles College. It is a Junior College (JUCO) basketball team and they are trying to get a state championship.
The team is led by their head coach John Mosley and he is a very smart and passionate coach. He may seem very strict sometimes but his tactics work to get the team better. The team has many former Division I recruits but they have messed up in some way such as grades or mentality.
The players are trying to get another chance of playing at the next level but they need to work their way back there.
The documentary does a very good job of explaining how and why the players got into the JUCO level. Most players either had bad grades or bad personal lives. The players are now trying to find a way to make it to the next level.
Two of the best people on the team are Shemar Morrow and Joe Hampton. They are very talented basketball players but have had a challenging time staying in the Division I level.
They were moved down to JUCO because of their bad attitude. Coach Mosley does a very good job with trying to get their attitude better as the season goes on and it improves the teams overall performance as well.
The team started off rough not winning many games and not being able to play together. Coach Mosley then found ways to bond the team together to get them learning how to play and work with each other.
As the season goes on, the team starts to get more comfortable with each other and win many more games.
The team is working to the state championship but their season is sadly cut short. The COVID pandemic struck very quickly around the world and it shut down their basketball season.
This was many players’ last chance at making it to the next level and it was sadly cut short. Thanks to the documentary airing on Netflix and getting many players the exposure they needed, many of the players were able to transfer and reach a higher, better school.
Point guard Deshaun Highler was able to move to the Division I level and play for the basketball team at Sacramento State.
John Mosley had a big impact on these young men’s lives and he decided to stay at Eastern Los Angeles College to try and help more young men reach where they needed to be.
“Last Chance U: Basketball” really helped some of these men reach their goals they have had since young kids.
