LEAD Mentors Postpone Freshmen Friday

On November 17, the LEAD mentors were going to host the first ever Freshmen Friday from 7 to 9 p.m., but due to complications, it was postponed for later this year.

The LEAD mentors are a group of 60 juniors and seniors, who are assigned about 10 freshmen, in which they connect with throughout the year to provide guidance. And to help their transition from the Monroe-Woodbury Middle School life to the High School life.

Freshman Friday was an event inspired by the LEAD mentors.

Ms. Sherman, an adviser of LEAD, said, “Freshman Friday was supposed to be three different events to appeal to all the different kinds of freshmen, interests of freshmen.”

Ms. Dunning, LEAD’s other adviser, said, “The LEAD mentors met several times and brainstormed ideas. They formed a committee and came up with 3 main activities for the event; Nitroball, Sip & Paint, and Bingo.”

The Nitroball tournaments would’ve been held in the gym, and the library would be split into two different sections; one would be for the bingo games and the other will be the sip and paint section.

Since the LEAD mentors are responsible for mentoring the freshmen, they would be the ones to help out and take care of the freshmen event.

One of the major problems that the LEAD mentors had with Freshmen Friday was the advertisement throughout the school.

“We sent out Google forms and partnered with the freshmen class advisers. We ran Morning Show skits and hung many posters but in the end we did not have enough students to hold the event,” Ms. Dunning replied.

Ms. Sherman stated, “We need a certain amount of people to attend in order to have the facilities open”.

This was not the only issue that came up in preparation for Freshman Friday, as transportation may complicate things even further. Due to no after-school buses on Fridays, the LEAD advisers are looking to move the event to a Thursday from 2 to 5 p.m.

Ms. Dunning stated, “We are fairly confident that this change will provide us with enough students to run the event.”

Nitroball, Sip & Paint, and Bingo weren’t the only ideas the LEAD mentors came up with. There were many ideas that ranged from movie night to capture the flag and even glow in the dark manhunt.

In response to if the LEAD mentors would ever host an event like this for the rest of the underclassman, Ms. Sherman stated that the mentors are focused mostly on the freshmen.

“It would be nice for the freshmen to have their own events since they are coming into the building for the first time,” said Ms. Sherman.
